Bishop David Atkinson has a PhD in chemistry and was ordained after a brief period teaching chemistry and religious studies. He became Bishop of Thetford in 2001 and is now one of the Assistant Bishops in the Diocese of Southwark. He has taught Christian ethics and the psychology of religion at Corpus Christi College, Oxford and is a former member of the Board of Operation Noah, a Christian organisation providing leadership, focus and inspiration in response to the growing climatic threat. He is author of “Renewing the face of the earth: a theological and pastoral response to climate change” and was instrumental in the development of the 2012 Ash Wednesday Declaration, challenging the Church to recognise that care for the world is central to its mission and fundamental to the Gospel. I was grateful to him for sharing his thoughts on “Climate change – the theology” at a symposium for clergy in the Kingston Episcopal Area in July 2013.
