Environment

We live in a world where there are two massive interconnected issues: climate change and, closely linked to it, the distribution of resources in the world, the way the economic system works and questions of sustainability.   To quote from Bishop David Atkinson, “If climate scientists are right, and there is huge majority agreement in the latest report from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, much of the earth could be uninhabitable for humans in 100 years time.”

Clearly this is a matter of the utmost importance, and it is one to which I am committed.   I serve alongside the Bishop of Dudley and others with key knowledge and experience on the Church of England’s Environment Working Group.   This is chaired by the Bishop of Salisbury, the Church’s lead bishop for the environment, and aims to coordinate and stimulate engagement with this vital area of mission and to support the Environment Officers within dioceses.   I am also the Diocese of Southwark’s lead bishop for the environment, and chair the diocesan Environmental Working Group.
